Alliance of American Football adds San Antonio as 8th franchise

SAN ANTONIO — The Alliance of American Football completed its awarding of franchises Thursday by placing a team in San Antonio.

Former San Diego Chargers coach Mike Riley will be the head coach and former Dallas Cowboys fullback Darryl “Moose” Johnston is the general manager.

San Antonio is the eighth and final city for The Alliance’s inaugural season, joining Orlando, Atlanta, Memphis, Salt Lake, Phoenix, San Diego and Birmingham.

The Alliance will kick off its season the week after the Super Bowl and has a TV contract with CBS.

“Not only does San Antonio have a large population of football fans, it has a first-class stadium to host them in,” says Charlie Ebersol, co-founder and CEO of the league. “The Alamodome is a perfect backdrop for Alliance San Antonio, and we are eager to give this city a competitive team, led by coach Mike Riley, that they can rally around and support.

Riley also has coached in the CFL and at Oregon State and Nebraska.
